DESCRIPTION

As the largest, and most trusted segment of healthcare professionals, nurses are positioned to address racial inequities and racism, and to be the change we want to see throughout the country. Leaders at ONL and NERBNA came together to create the Nurse’s Pledge to Champion Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity. This webinar will describe the pledge and how it was created, the reaction to the pledge, and ongoing work.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe how to create a coalition that produces action and change.

  2. Apply the concepts of the Nurse’s Pledge in their practice.

PRESENTERS & BIOS

  • Nadia Raymond, PhD©, MSN/ MHA, RN
    Nadia Raymond is Regional Nurse Director at Southern Jamaica Plain Brigham and Women’s hospital. Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center is a community health center that delivers care to more than 10,000 patients and surrounding community. Nadia received her nursing diploma in 1995 from St Elizabeth hospital, her bachelor’s in nursing in 2014, her master’s in 2015 in Nursing leadership , nursing education and health administration from Regis College. She is a Ph.D candidate at UMass Lowell focusing on nursing and health promotion. Nadia is adjunct faculty and serves as the curriculum development for Equal Health. Nadia developed and thought a Leadership roundtable to women leaders in the global setting Nadia has extensive experience in global health nursing and the social justice arena and co-chairs the ONL diversity and inclusivity task force and also contribute to the DEI efforts at MGB.
     

  • Sasha DuBois, MSN, RN
    Sasha DuBois, M.S.N., R.N. is a Nurse Director at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) in Boston, MA. Invested in nursing education, mentoring, and the development of tomorrow’s nurses, she works as a Mentor at the Simmons University Dotson Bridge and Mentoring Program. Sasha received her BSN with a minor in Africana Studies and Biology from Simmons College and an MSN from Emmanuel College in Nursing Leadership and Management. Sasha invests in the progression, visibility, perception, and preservation of the nursing profession. She has served on her hospital Nursing Practice Committees and Magnet initiatives to engage clinical nurses on the importance of Magnet Designation. Sasha serves as the Secretary for the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA), President of the New England Black Regional Nurses Association, and sings in her church's young adult choir. She is also a member of American Nurses Association and Association of Nurse Leaders (AONL), and actively served on various community boards. She is also a mentor for the BWH/Roxbury Community College partnership as well as directs the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Neskey Educational Opportunity for PCAs. A Boston native, Sasha DuBois is a highly motivated emerging leader and continues to seek ways to give back to her profession as well as her community.
     

  • Cassandra Mombrun, MSN RN CPNP-PC
    Cassandra Mombrun MSN RN CPNP-PC has been a nurse for 15 years, her experiences encompass clinical nursing, mentoring, leadership and advocacy. Her quick ascension to Nurse Director Thoracic Surgery at Brigham & Women’s Hospital (BWH) following her stint as Assistant Nurse Director has earned her the respect of peers and subordinates as she has worked effectively to transform care at the bedside in the tradition of BWH’s reputation as a center for excellent care. An alumna of Northeastern University Cassandra obtained a Masters in Science Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at Regis College. Her passion for pediatrics naturally led her to Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) where she held several positions ranging from Staff Nurse to Clinical Instructor & Clinical Informatics Specialist. As an Informatics Specialist at BCH she used gained expertise in clinical documentation and technology to help on a variety of hospital wide initiatives with the goal of enhancing the clinical care process. Cassandra is no stranger to academic settings as well, at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy she was an Assistant Professor in the Nursing program, she also sat on the faculty senate. A clinical instructor at Simmons University she is also a student mentor for their Dotson Bridge & Mentoring program. Currently she is the Vice President of the New England Regional Black Nurses Association (NERBNA) and member of Organization of Nurse Leaders. Recently NERBNA partnered with Organization of Nurse Leaders (ONL) to develop the nurses pledge: “Nurses Pledge to Champion Diversity, Equity & Inclusivity” Cassandra was tasked along with other leaders (NERBNA and ONL) to bring this work to fruition. Cassandra continues to collaborate with ONL as an advocate to increase diversity in nursing.
     

  • Carol Conroy, DNP, RN, FAAN
    Dr. Carol Conroy is a professional nursing leader, executive, and educator, with extensive experience in healthcare. She has been recognized and honored for her strong background in patient safety, physician relations and implementation of evidence-based nursing practices. Conroy served as Vice President for Operations and Chief Nursing Officer at Southwestern Vermont Health Care (SVHC) in Bennington, Vt., until her retirement in 2017. She was responsible for planning, organizing and directing the delivery of patient care and support services in assigned areas as well as inpatient, emergency, outpatient, transitional and long-term care. Prior to SVHC, Conroy was Corporate Vice President for Exceptional Care at Caritas Christi Healthcare in Boston, Mass., from 2007 to 2008; Chief Nursing Officer at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, Mass., from 2003 to 2006; Director of Perioperative Services at Boston Medical Center from 1998-2003; and Director of Perioperative Services at Health Alliance in Leominster, Mass. Presently, Conroy serves as President of the Organization of Nurse Leaders of MA-RI-CT-NH-VT. She also serves on the Board of Trustees of Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Other current board service includes the Vermont Association of Hospitals and Health Systems, Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Tau Chapter, and the Executive Board at Chelonian Research Foundation.She is a member of American Nursing Association and the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is the recipient of several awards including New England’s Organization of Nursing Leaders, Sigma Theta Tau International, Vermont Governor’s Certificate and Massachusetts Organization of Nurse Executives. In addition to her presentations at healthcare organizations and other institutions, Conroy has written many publications on nursing management, and patient safety and quality of care. Since 2017, Conroy has been a Magnet Appraiser Candidate for the American Nurses Credential Center (ANCC). In 2010 and 2015 Conroy lead Southwestern Vermont Medical Center to its third and fourth Magnet® re-designation. In 2017 Conroy led Southwestern Vermont Medical Center to the ANCC Magnet Prize™. Conroy received a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Regis College, a Master of Business Administration and Master of Science degree in Nursing administration from Anna Maria College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Cornell University School of Nursing.
     

  • Justin Drew, MSN, RN, NEA-BC
    Justin graduated with a bachelor's degree in Illustrative Photography from Syracuse University's SI Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1998. In 2000, Justin graduated with a bachelor's degree in Nursing from Syracuse University's College of Nursing. In 2012, Justin received a graduate certification from the University of Minnesota's College of Nursing for Leadership in health information technology for health professionals. Justin worked in a variety of settings as a direct care nurse including; pediatrics, surgical ICU, inpatient medical/surgical, and hospice. Justin has been at Middlesex Health for 15 years in various leadership roles. Those roles have included the Manager of a 30 bed inpatient unit, Clinical Director of a moderate sized homecare department, and Director of the Middlesex Health Cancer Center for the past 5 years. Justin got his masters degree in nursing with a focus on leadership in 2016 from the University of Hartford. Justin is the President-Elect of the Organization of Nurse Leaders (ONL) representing over 1100 nurse leaders from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Vermont.
     

  • Amanda Stefancyk Oberlies, PhD, MBA, RN, CENP
    Amanda Stefancyk Oberlies is the Chief Executive Officer of the Organization of Nurse Leaders (ONL) of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Vermont, a 1,100-plus professional membership organization for current and aspiring nurse leaders. ONL specializes in advocacy and leadership development. Prior to joining ONL, Dr. Oberlies was employed by the American Organization for Nurse Leaders (AONL), a subsidiary of the American Hospital Association. In her role as Director for the Center of Care Innovation and Transformation, Dr. Oberlies led the quality agenda and the Care Innovation and Transformation (CIT) program— bringing the program to more than 200 pre-acute, acute, and post-acute care organizations. Prior to joining AONE in 2011, Dr. Oberlies served as nursing director at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Here she led her unit’s participation in the AONL/Robert Wood Johnson-sponsored, national initiative Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB), and authored a year-long American Journal of Nursing article series highlighting her unit’s success and lessons learned from TCAB. Dr. Oberlies has served on many national committees and boards, has received multiple awards and honors, has published more than 15 peer-reviewed articles, and has spoken extensively on the national stage. Dr. Oberlies completed her undergraduate studies at Saint Joseph’s College in Maine, received a Master’s in Nursing and a Master’s in Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University, and her PhD in Health Services Research from Vanderbilt University.

  • This course has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider #CEP16785, for a maximum of 1.00 Nursing Contact Hour. The licensee must retain this document for a period of four (4) years after the course concludes.
