PRESENTER BIO(s)

Dr. Maura MacPhee is a health services researcher who studies nurses’ work environments. She has expertise in healthcare leadership development. She co-developed a residential leadership training institute for nurse leaders in the province of British Columbia, and she adapted this leadership model to leadership development in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Brazil. She is a member of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing workgroup currently examining graduate-level nursing leadership preparation. Research-wise, she has been studying care delivery models and workload management assessment tools to inform safe staffing (e.g., skill mix, staffing levels, layout). She has conducted care delivery research in acute care, ambulatory care, specialty care settings (e.g., oncology, emergency) and most recently, the long-term care sector. She uses mixed methods to study healthcare delivery systems, including realist methods.

Dr. Farinaz Havaei is a health services researcher interested in studying work environment factors that facilitate or hinder nurses’ ability to deliver quality and safe patient care across the healthcare spectrum. Funded by Michael Smith Foundation Health Research (MSFHR) and Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Dr. Havaei’s research recently shifted to the long-term care sector where she has been evaluating the intended and unintended consequences of pandemic management policies (e.g., visitation restriction and single site employment order) on nurses and their care provision to residents and their families. Dr. Havaei holds a MSFHR Scholar Award (2021-2026) focused on promoting workplace psychological health and safety of the nursing workforce in-long term care. Dr. Havaei is a mixed method researcher and a psychometric expert.

• This course has been approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider #CEP16785, for a maximum of 1.00 Nursing Contact Hour. The licensee must retain this document for a period of four (4) years after the course concludes.
